I had a realization: Deen Games should focus more on da’wah. This is, in many ways, the crux of what we’re all about; da’wah to Muslims, da’wah to non-Muslims, it’s all good! In this vein of realization, I entered in the Mini Ludum Date competition (#27) themed “All Talk.”
“All talk” is a great theme, because it allowed me to recreate an old game engine from the stone-age: Choose Your Destiny, in the vein of the Choose Your Own Adventure line of books. It’s a great engine because it’s simple to create and run, and it focuses on what makes games so great: a story. It doesn’t focus heavily on graphics and super-interactivity, although these things can also become elements of CYD games.
I took inspiration from the story of Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal, when he was imprisoned and tortured to make statements against the proper ‘aqeedah (belief system). Every other major scholar of that time broke, except him; he alone stood up for the truth.
I therefore present you with the interactive narrative titled “The Prisoner.” Screenshots:
The engine and content were written from scratch, as was the story; out of three major arcs and ten endings, only one arc and four endings made it. More to come insha’Allah in the next iteration. (And yes, the UI is intentionally very minimalistic; that will improve too, insha’Allah.)
Description: I entered in the Mini Ludum Dare contest, themed around talk and narrative, and created a choose-your-own-adventure-like game entitled The Prisoner, inspired by the story of Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal when he was tortured and told to make statements against the proper belief system of the Muslims.
