Forget “Don’t Forget!”: 0.2 Released

I try not to do this, but sometimes, a game idea or proof-of-concept needs to be put down. That’s what happened with Don’t Forget! 0.2. (Which, by the way, was released here.)

Don’t Forget! was a great concept that was hard to make fun and strategic. Fun means you enjoy the game, even the repetitive core gameplay. Strategic means you can strategize or use your skills to succeed; it challenges you.

The core gameplay just didn’t make it. After throwing out several ideas, it seems the only way to salvage it to meet these goals is to expand it into a bigger and more complicated game.

That’s not an investment we want to make right now. We need to invest in tools and games (and game engines) that will allow us to build bigger games faster. One-off games with no sequel (technically-similar future games or outright sequels) aren’t going to do that for us.

So try it out if you’re curious. This project is going into the shelf for a while. Insha’Allah we’ll come back to it later. (It would be great fun as the “battle engine” of a deep 2D RPG, for example.)

Don’t Forget! provided us a step forward on the technical side, and we will reuse those lessons in future games.

With that, insha’Allah our next game will be a 2D top-down adventure game (similar to an RPG, without any actual battles) on the topic of qadar. More on that soon, insha’Allah!
